Contrasting colours

colour main by caroline..collins

I chose the red and green pepper and grapefruit for their contrasting colors for this exercise. I placed them on a plain piece of paper in front of a large window, I placed a large light defractor to the side to reduce shadows and took the image. f/5.6. The images shows the strong colours well against the white background.

Monochrome - simple black and white conversion

I used photoshop to simply convert my original color image to black and white, the red and green peppers look so similar in hue that they could be the same color, the yellow grapefruit a light grey.

Monochrome green filter

Inreasing the green slider on the black and white converter makes the red pepper look very dark grey almost black, the green a very dark grey and the yellow grapefruit is lighter than the simple conversion to black and white (then again the contrast is quite high.

Monochrome blue filter

Turning the blue slider up and the red and green down turns the subjects black, the green is slightly lighter. The image is very  over exposed but that's probably due to the red and green being reduced.

Monochrome red filter

This image has the red filter increased, the red appears black, the green appears very dark grey, the yellow grapefruit has a darker hue than the simple black and white conversion.

Catch up

I finally have my broadband connection restored after moving house, it's been a very long 3 weeks, I really didn't appreciate how much is actually done with the use of broadband!. I'm happy to be able to update my blog now, I have a back log of photo's that I've been able to add in Starbucks, that I need to add my notes to.

I'm not sure if moving house has been too much of a distraction, it's certainly been hard work, but I've not enjoyed the colour chapter very much, I'm certainly struggling to find the correct colour combinations for the assignment and have on the whole for the exercises.

Also I feel that I am changing how I take my images. To date I seem to have focused on taking an image of an object or 'something' also looking back I've enjoyed taking close up's with my magnifying lenses. But now I'm feeling like I need to 'draw back' and include more of a scene which includes more interest or that tells more of a story. I find I enjoy looking at images from the 'greats' far more than previously where I would just think 'what on earth is this?', I do still think very often 'what on earth is this' but I feel I have developed a new appreciation and understanding.

Exercise: Primary and secondary colours

This and the next 2 images were taken using the bracketing setting on my camera, I set it to take 3 images, 1 half a stop llighter and 1 half a stop darker, I prefer the darker image as the blue is a deeper saturation, the lighter setting looks a little washed out

This image was also taken ith one stop higher and lower, I think the original image has the correct balance of saturation, the light takes too much light out of the stome building

I like the colours of this image, the colours run diagonally through the image which although is over exposed, this over exposure is balanced by under exposure at the opposite corner of the image

This dosen't really fit with the colour wheel but i like the texture of the subject and the response from those who've looked at it....mmm!
