Complimentary colours - orange/blue 1:2

I took this image with my telephoto lens at 205mm, the bright orange caught my eye. The bright blue of the bag seems to have the same brightness as the orange but the two alone have a ratio of 1:1 proportion, I felt the rest of the frame contains a lot of other occurences of blue which enhance the ration nearer 1;2. I have cropped the image slightly as red vertical stripes could be seen to the left of the man which took the eye away from the intended subject, removing this bold red returns the attention to the subject. I like the way the image takes the eye in the direction the man is walking giving the image some interest and balance.

Complimentary colours - red/green 1:1

This image was taken en route to the cathedral. I initially took the image for the yellow flowers which caught my eye growing on the corner of the wall but later decided there was more green in the frame, about 1:1 with the red door. The image also has lines along the top and bottom of the wall leading the eye to the greenery. The arched window also give interest to the image and the viewer may wonder what is through the archway.

Complimentary colours - yellow/violet 1:3

The combination of yellow and violet is difficult to find, I was excited to find this violet coloured flower with a perfetct yellow stamen in a florist shop. I took the image with the permission of the shopkeeper but didnt have too much time control over the composition. I have cropped this image several ways but felt the best was a square size which I feel suits the subject.

Complimentary colours - orange/blue 1;2

This image of an interesting rooftop demonstrates the combination of the orange bricks and the blue sky, I cropped the image a little to achieve the correct proportions of 1:2. The image shows symetry and simplicity.

Similar colours - green/blue

This image of part of 'steep hill' shows the deep green of the shop front which is brighter than the green of the trees to the left of the frame, although the blue of the sky balances the colour in the frame

Similar colours - yellow/green

This was a planned image using oracle cards on a white cloth. I used my tripod, placed near a window to make use of the natural light but used a flash along with a light reflector to reduce shadows. I used manual focus to keep the text at the top and bottom of the green card.

Similar colours - blue/green

Following my daughter and friends home from a walk I notices the similar colour the girl on the right was wearing, although the girl on the left is wearing red the colours together balance the red. The image shows movement of the feet and the girls all looking left at what the girl in red is pointing at.

Similar colours - green/yellow/red

This image was taken in a little prayer chapel within Lincoln cathedral where candles can be lit for requests for prayers can be left. This is an area of quiet where people come and go in a mutually respectful manner. The green and yellow of the pew cushions and the red of the cusioning along the back of the pews is of equal saturation. Although the colours are not strong or dynamic they are similar but the saturation is subtle and somehow reflects the peaceful location.

Contrasting colours - orange/red

This image taken at the international food festival in Lincoln shows the rich colour of the red sun dried tomatoes and the spice infused orange potatoes. The saturation is equal for both the orange and red which balances the colours for the image. The image was taken on a diagonal to give a dynamic impression which matches the strong colours.

Contrasting colours - green/orange

This is an image of my cat. The image was taken outdoors to take advantage of natural light. I used a small aperture of f/22. I cropped the image down to use the eyes and nose to create an implied triangle. The saturation of the colour was increased slightly to improve the green of the eyes and orange of the nose.

Contrasting colours - red/blue

This image was planned using a tripod and a light reflector. I placed my table near the window to take advantage of any natural light. I took several images and initially chose an image that included just the two packets to the left of the frame but changed my mind as this image includes an open, crumpled packet which makes the image a little more interesting with an implied triangle shape which balances the frame. The red a blue contrast with equal saturation of colour results in a dynamic effect.

Contrasting colours - yellow:red

f/5.6 1/100 25mm ISO100 filter-red
For this image I set up my tripod and table near the window to take advantage of the natural light, I also used a light reflector to reduce any shadows. I first used a flash to throw as much light onto the subject as possible but there was a reflection on the red cover so I relied upon the light reflector and light from the window alone. The silver pencil kept rolling off so I slid it under the band. The bright yellow of the sticky note pad has a similar saturation of colour as the red filofax which makes the contrast balanced. Post production I added a red filter to add further warmth to the image.

Colour accent - red

This image was taken on Mablethorpe beach, the donkey's were taking a break lined up together. I took several images including the back of the donkeys and the saddles, all of which were nice but I chose this image as the red head band was suitable for this colour accent image. I cropped the image to reduce the red of the headband of the donkey to the left which was a little distracting even though it wasn't in focus. I also increased the colour saturation of the image which deepened the colour of the sand in the background which detracted from the donkey which was my intention so I reduced it again.

Colour accent - blue

This image was taken in Lincoln outside the Drill Hall performing arts centre. The face caught my eye then the church steeple in the background and dome. I initially cropped the image to exclude the van, but felt there was a relationship between the face, steeple/dome and the van creating an implied triangle and also balance to the frame, the van also give context to the image.

Colour accent - red

This was a planned image to include the black/dark spines of the books but one of the books a bright colour to lead the eye. I took several images to include the detail of the book case but this detracted attention from what I intended. I used flash and a light reflector as the bookcase was located at the back of a room, I needed light but to reduce shadows also.

Colour accent - red

This image is of the organ within part of Lincoln cathedral. The light in the cathedral highlights the detail on the nave in front of the organ showing an almost yellow colour at the same saturation as the gold coloured metal of the organ. There is a small red curtain to the lower left of the frame which has the same saturation as the yellow in the rest of the frame, although the curtain is small compared with the size of the frame, the strength of the red draws the eye straight away. I included the people at the bottom of the frame to give the image context.

Assignment 3 - Tutor Report

Tutor Report

Overall Comments

You have done well with producing a range of different types of image that meet the brief in terms of finding and portraying the range of colour relationships. Where I think you still need to concentrate on is combining success in fulfilling the brief with producing images that stand out from the crowd. You need to be thinking more creatively about your image making, use other people’s work as a source of inspiration but in applying this on a shoot, use your own imagination. In this way your images will develop and reflect your own particular voice.

Remember that the brief for the assignments are there to give you a structure that you can adapt and alter to suit your own purpose. It is not necessary to rigidly stick to the letter of the course material.

Feedback on assignment

As I have mentioned you have done well in finding good colour relationships in most of your images. I think your strongest points are your observation of the colours in a scene as well as finding the ratios of colours to match Goethe’s observations. Your weak points are in framing and a consideration of what to keep in and what to leave out to concentrate attention.

For example your image of the man on the seafront at Mabelthorpe catches the colours well and you have used the telephoto lens well to concertina the view and bring the people and hence colours into close proximity. But I feel it could be better by cropping out some of the top of the image as it’s the figures that are of interest and the tops of the lamp posts aren’t.

Again, the image of Bailgate archway - what was your rationale for including the window in the frame? You are wanting to concentrate attention on the red door and as you point out the lines on the wall leading the eye to the greenery. I would suggest therefore the window is a distraction.

Your eye caught well the violet coloured flower with the yellow stamen but perhaps you haven’t made the best of this including the strong diagonal of the green stem behind the main flower. I wonder if you might have done better to have taken the flower home to work on a still life with planned lighting to being out the shape as well as the colour of the flower - look for example at Weston’s shell image (http://www.edward-weston.com/images/ Edward_Weston_Natural/Shell_1927_(1S)_large.jpg) or Cunningham’s “Two
Callas” ( http://www.photoliaison.com/imogen_cunningham/ Imogen_Cunningham.htm ) although they are black and white they show the potential of concentrating on shape and texture that you could then introduce the additional factor of colour with your flower.

Your Staunton Harold building captures the blue sky well - I’m not so convinced about the orange - it’s subtle and while I can understand you going for symmetry but you might want to think about an alternative composition of the main elements:

Similarly with your image of your cat - it ’ s a good image but one that has been done

many times but an alternative crop not only fits the bill of the colours but also makes for a more unusual image concentrating on the diagonal of the eye and nose.

Your image of the international food market is good in that you have made an interesting composition and used the diagonal well but unfortunately the red and orange combination falls more into the category of similar colours rather than contrasting colours. You may want to reconsider substituting this with one of your weaker images - either the green and yellow of the church pews or the cards.

Your picture of sweet wrappers in the contrasting section while they fit the bill  of the assignment well lacks a little in imagination - the work is done for you with the colours of the wrappers and the composition of them in the frame is rather ordinary. Look at some of the pack shots in advertising and see how they have introduced some originality.

Your shot of the organiser lends itself to development – did you think about scribbling a message on the pad in blue ink to inject a little irony or humour? What about a graduated neutral filter to darken an edge or a corner?

In your accent group your strong images are Face on wall - with this is there any reason why you have cropped off the top of the spire? Alternatively you could try a different tighter crop that made more of the interesting graphical shapes,

Donkey faces and book shelf are also good - simple, straight forward but well done.

The Cathedral is weaker - it has the people cropped off and the additional competing colours - yellow and gold with the red.

Learning Logs/Critical essays

It’s good to see your review of other photographers work in your blog and together with your analysis of your work this is improving but you could still include more reflection on the outcome of your shoots - what has worked well, what you might do differently and how you might incorporate aspects of other people’s work into yours.

Student feedback
Finding the colours what quite a challenge so positive feedback on achieving this was welcome. I do find it hard to think creatively, I find myself too busy thinking about fulfilling the brief, selecting the appropriate settings, the composition of the frame, light, colour, and find little room left for creating something different. I hope I will get to the stage of subconcious competence which will allow creativity through.

In this assignment I was aware of the mistake in the previous assignment, that of size of the image. I therefore held back on the cropping which has clearly not paid off, and my focus was entirely on the colour combinations.

Amended image: My tutor suggested I make a tighter crop to make use of the graphical shapes, I've tilted the image in order to put the spire on a diagonal which has almost eliminated the blue on the side of the van, which is my accent colour, so this is the maximum tilt, but I think it works nicely, it gives the image more interest.

Monochrome blue filter

colour blue by caroline..collins
colour blue, a photo by caroline..collins on Flickr.

Turning the blue slider up and the red and green down turns the subjects black, the green is slightly lighter. The image is very  over exposed but that's probably due to the red and green being reduced.
